Yemeni group of researchers and activists have kicked off Goethe-Institut-supported seeking to protect and promote Socotrian folk literature.
The 4 months-project aims at documenting a collection of folk literature on Socotra by collecting, revising, and making it available in Arabic on a database that will be designed for this purpose. Then promote it through various media, cultural and academic platforms, as well as coordinating with other cultural activists in order to benefit from this project where they can produce other cultural and artistic works.
The project will be implemented by a selected group of Socotra girls and youth who worked previously in collecting the intangible heritage of Socotra. They will focus on collecting nearly 20 Socotrian tales. That will provide a base to extend in the future through cultural partnerships working in the field of folk culture in Socotra, Al-Mahra, and other areas of Yemen
